Interno di una catacomba rupestre scavata nella roccia calcarea: tombe ad arcosolio lungo le pareti e tombe a fossa sul pavimento, con un pilastro di roccia risparmiata a sostegno della volta.

Pietre Vive — About

Who I am, and what Pietre Vive is

I’m Giuseppe Parisi: a photographer for as long as I can remember, and a documentary-maker out of passion. From a birthday present at fifteen — a camera, in Palermo — through thirty years of landscapes, dives, books and walks among ruins, all the way to the Iblean plateau, where I now live and work.

Pietre Vive is a historical-archaeological documentation project dedicated to Byzantine, Norman and medieval Southern Italy: a period we very often know only by halves — where the line between established fact and hypothesis runs thin, and which I prefer to respect rather than ignore.

What you’ll find here

The work behind the documentaries: the sources I build them on, the criteria by which I tell a fact from a hypothesis and a hypothesis from a legend, the second thoughts, the discoveries that change a script halfway through. No absolute certainties sold as such — only honest research, told step by step.
